Canyon Lake Fly Fishing Report 3-11-2012

Weather: Clear, Temp: 65 F, Wind: SSW 5-10 mph, Water Temp: 62 F

Fished Canyon Lake today with Jon Fisher from San Antonio. We launched at Jacob’s Creek boat ramp and fished the Jacob’s Creek channel area. This area has historically produced good winter-spring catches of stripers and white bass. It also provides opportunities at carp during mid-spring through summer.

We first checked the back of Jacob’s Creek to see if any carp were spawning or cruising the shorelines (#1 on map). We found carp along the rear shoreline, but they had stirred up the soft mud bottom and were very hard to see. We then moved back out to deeper wider water and caught a few white bass (#2 & 4 on map), 1 largemouth (#3 on map), and 1 striper (#5 on map).

The fish seemed to be hugging shorelines in 10-15 ft. of water rather than staying in the center of the channel which is 25-40 feet deep. We were throwing Chrome Minnows and chartreuse Meaty Minnows on fast sinking lines. For the most part, the fish were scattered and unorganized. We paddled many miles in search of stripers but never really found them. All in all though, it was a good afternoon, with beautiful weather and clear cool water.
