A javelina (collard peccary) raises his snout to get a whiff of potential trouble. Javelinas have poor eyesight and use their keen sense of smell to detect danger, locate food and stay together. #dslrcameratrap #caseysmartt #javelina #collardpeccary
A bobcat approaches and marks a camera trap, marked earlier by another cat who sprayed (and blurred) the lens. Bobcats are curious, bold, and territorial. They frequently scent-mark camera trap equipment, especially their reflections in the glass. #caseysmartt #cameratrap #bobcat #atascosacounty
A javelina (collard peccary) on a sparse flat in South Texas. Although they are often confused with feral hogs, javelinas are not true pigs.#caseysmartt #cameratrap #javelinas #collardpeccary
A few years ago, I came across a void (not really big enough to be a cave) in a limestone outcropping on ranch near New Braunfels, TX. It looked really crittery so I checked it first for rattlesnakes then shoved a camera and flash into the hole. I set up a second flash outside the opening. On the very first night I captured several images of this curious ringtail peeking in. Good times! #caseysmartt #cameratrap #ringtailcat #comalcounty #newbraunfelstexas
Capturing great camera trap images is so exciting because there are so many failures along the way. This camera trap, left in the brush for several weeks, captured photographs of a passing bobcat. The bobcat did her part- she showed up. But, the composition (set up during the day) lacks intimacy and a sense of place. The lighting poured together without dimension or texture, sultry night air fogged the lens, and part of the lens hood is showing. Maybe next time! 🙂. #caseysmartt #cameratrap #bobcat
Sometimes trivial moments in nature make interesting images. I was hoping to capture coyotes at this spot but these squabbling pyrrhuloxias (desert cardinals) showed up instead. #cameratrap #caseysmartt #pyrrhuloxia
The always-stylish javelina, scrappy resident of the arid Brush Country. I placed a D7200 with a hotshoe-mounted speedlight on the ground, plugged in a motion trigger and quietly slipped away. Several hours later I returned and had captured a few shots of this guy before he most certainly huffed off into the sticks. #caseysmartt #javelina #cameratrap
Curious and agile, ringtails are gifted climbers. This one descended from the safety of an oak and elm canopy to investigate an old log and prickly pear cactus. #caseysmartt #cameratrap #ringtailcat #ringtail
Although they are reported to be common in South Texas, I don’t recall ever seeing this bird- a Northern Flicker. What a nice surprise on one of my camera traps. #caseysmartt #northernflicker #cameratrap #nikond7000
A green jay swoops down in front of a camera trap at daybreak in the South Texas Brush Country. #cameratrap #caseysmartt #greenjay #nikond3200 #atascosacounty

Visitors to a fragrant lilac tree over the course of 24hrs include an opossum, pair of cardinals, and numerous fox squirrels. #dslrcameratrap #cameratrap #caseysmartt #opossum #cardinals #foxsquirrels
Out for a midnight stroll, a striped skunk shows his plumage and then quietly passes by. #caseysmartt #cameratrap #stripedskunk
When you slap mosquitoes and squash fire ants to get a camera trap in just the right spot, it’s nice to know you can count on Mr. Coon to make an appearance when nothing else will. #caseysmartt #cameratrap #bexarcounty
